Well call me sentimental but I like the ladder approach, a clean window left dry and gleaming by a man with a smile while your sat at your desk. He told me his name which was Bennet and asked if he could mow my lawn. I was in need of the grass being cut and said yes. We negotiated a price and Bennet cut my lawn, carried out a patio clean, packed up the bricks, and did such a good job and took such a long time, two and a half hours, that I felt bad keeping him there so long. There was something different about Bennet. He agreed to anything you said because he had a wife and three kids who had to be fed. He did not live in my neighborhood and walked all the way to where I lived where he walked up and down the street with his noisy lawnmower looking for work.

I got used to Bennet. I did not have to tell him what to do. I just let him in, gave him a bottle of water and a sandwich if I had bread, and let him be. As I got used to Bennet we talked sometimes and Bennet saw the poster of my film on the wall and asked if I was a writer. I said yes, and that was that. Bennet saved up his courage and a few lawns later asked me how my writing was going. I told him briefly that I was writing my 11th novel. When he came the following week to do the lawn Bennet said that he was a writer too. I said great, that’s wonderful, but did not think too much about it. He said to me that he wants to make money too from his writing, and I laughed. I said, Bennet, look after your lawnmower, you make more money than me.

Two weeks later Bennet brought two pages which had been neatly typed and asked if I would read it. I said yes, and read it that night. I was shocked. I had expected to read drivel or some hard-baked poetry, and here were two pages written in perfect English, and was a piece of writing entitled African Development about a white guy in his Hummer traveling from one side of Africa to the other giving pencils and books to poor African children who did not have anything to write with and used coal.

I was struck by the quality and style of the writing. It was sparse and therefore more interesting. When Bennet came back the next day to hear what I had to say about the writing, I told him, Bennet, I feel so ashamed. You ARE a writer, and better than me. I couldn’t believe what I read. You don’t need my lessons. I was ashamed of how I had behaved. I had judged Bennet too because of my own prejudices. It was a good lesson for me. Bennet who had no job and needed money himself was working to help save Africa’s children. In time I learned that Bennet was from another country in Africa and that he had a degree. In his country he was a man of learning; in South Africa he was Bennet, the lawn guy.

The gaps between generations have grown so big that we can no longer try to understand what the life of our parents was. Even today our world is full of both social injustice and huge environmental problems. Amazon’s rainforests are quickly disappearing due to the selfishness and greed of the livestock owners who seek new pastures. Our water supplies are slowly coming to an end, but no one realizes that (or at least showing that he cares). The same goes for natural resources such as oil, gas and coal. If those disappear completely, we will no longer be able to support the lifestyle we are used to now – cars, electricity, tap water. Someone must think of something (and think pretty quick) – but who? It’s time for the new generation to save the world, this time for real – Nintendo heroes need not apply.

Is it going to happen? I believe so.

What about the evils of our society? Racism, sexism, xenophobia – they are part of our daily life. There are many victims – people who lose their dignity and sometimes their lives. What for? Everyone saw it in a World War II, but how many actually tried to raise and educate their children without a drop of hate in their hearts?

Religion doesn’t help either – killing “infidels”, enslaving women, branding homosexuality as sin etc, etc. This leads to more violence and death among humans. Why? Aren’t we all one big family that lives together on the planet Earth? We need to get rid of all prejudices – but how?

I heard one of my pals complaining from the quality of air in his house. He was convinced that the culprit for the dust and a thousand other microscopic things circulating in the air of a typical house was the carpeted floor. First and foremost I got a copy of the Swedish study that showed that cases of asthma increased significantly since the use of carpet in Sweden declined. What was so important abou this study and my friend?

I wanted to show him that removing your carpet is not a guaranteed solution to your poor indoor air quality problem. The Swedish have replaced their carpets with hard floors with the best intention of getting rid of asthma and other allergic reactions to dirt and dust in the air. Unfortunately for them cases of asthma increased instead of the anticipated decrease in this nasty desease.

What is the solution to poor indoor air quality that so badly sets the foundation for a respiratory desease like asthma? Very simple – regular vacuuming and carpet cleaning. Fullstop.

We all bring dirt and dust with our shoes into our home. Even if you clean your shoes very carefully on the outside mat. These little particles circulate in the house air and we breathe them. But soon after you enter your home they slowly fall down and settle into between the carpet fibres (this is if you have carpet, of course). They will stay there until you vacuum your carpet and suck them out of there. Gone. No more allergens in the air. This brilliant function of the house carpet to trap dirt and dust actually makes him act like a filter. Without man designing carpet to act like a filter we have this secondary function that actively protects us from the dut and dirt we bring home with our shoes.

When it settles down eventually, there is nothing to hold it on the floor and any slight air movement (when you open a window or walk around) propels it back in the air. Even if you try and vacuum regularly the nature of the hard floor makes it impossible to hold these microscopic particles from flying around when you hit them with the vac’s head.

It’s a tough one and the Swedish have learned it the hard way.

Upon hearing this convincing and very logically sounding story, my pal decided that he is not throwing out his carpets but employ a reputable carpet cleaning company to deep clean his carpets. Time to clean the filters, as he said.

Needless to say I was very happy for him. He was about to make a very poor decision based on old wives tales  but got it together in time.
